A tragic railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and management of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The accident took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line developed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this accident,” stated the head of state.
The president announced that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The president stated plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those involved.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a central public works project of the former leader, whose term concluded the prior year. This project was intimately linked to his leadership's strategic vision for the southern region.
Another massive rail project from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economic fortunes of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The building of both railway systems was overseen by the armed forces, marking a dramatic expansion of its responsibilities in national projects. They were completed at an fast-tracked rate, beating forecasts to be at least partly launched before the end of that presidency.
However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously fueled significant apprehensions over operational security.
- Sunday's derailment was the third event on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This encompasses an prior crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen a couple of non-fatal derailments.
Calls for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the catastrophe, the head of a key rival party urged an urgent suspension in the development and management of all comparable projects.
This stoppage was suggested until the completion of a comprehensive technical review. The party declared that the loss of life "demands immediate answers."
In reply, the president insisted that the train had been functioning in total adherence to all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would continue to be "responsible" in both the development and operation of these vital initiatives.
