Pat Cummins bowling

The Australian skipper has claimed 309 Test scalps in 71 five-day games with an average of 22.10.

Australia's chief selector George Bailey has stated that pace spearhead Cummins will play a "major part" in the forthcoming historic rivalry.

Rumors had circulated that Cummins might sit out due to a stress fracture in his back that had not yet healed.

Initial reports from the squad suggested no final decision had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the Test matches kicking off on November 21 in Perth.

He revealed that Cummins is "building up" and was "optimistic" about the likelihood of participating.

"We're aware that the clock is ticking and various factors around that, aside from the physical problem, but further aspects," he commented.

"We're encouraged. There's strong faith that he will feature a major part. With luck it's the first Test. Otherwise, we'll adjust."

Injury History

He was sidelined Australia's limited-overs series against India and New Zealand last month after scans revealed a lumbar bone stress.

Previous incidents include of spinal problems, with flare-ups in multiple past seasons causing him to miss several home seasons in four years.

Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his recovery plan to make the squad for the series.

He mentioned that it was unclear if Cummins had begun bowling as part of his rehabilitation but acknowledged it was "pressing" for him to recover fully for the opener.

Contingency Plans

In case of absence, ex-skipper Smith will lead the side.

The talented all-rounder was recently pulled out from the national team for their limited-overs matches against the subcontinent side as a preventive step because of soreness in his side.

Bailey described it as a "minor" injury and confirmed that Green will play in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "well-prepared to resume bowling."

"Considerable effort has gone into creating the schedule for him to participate for the initial game as an dual-role player," he elaborated.

"Originally, he'd only feature in the first two ODIs anyway. How he handles the willow in shorter formats, even if it just sets him back for another day, the choice was made to adopt a safer strategy."
