As any significant awards ceremony approaches, there’s always a demand to include additional classifications to acknowledge underappreciated efforts and fill the passions of fans with niche passions.
A fellow writer previously argued supporting a scary games classification. That would be fantastic. Equally deserving are tabletop games, this being a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me when I prioritize because like all blinkered fanatics, there's a strong justification for why my demand is the most urgent and significant. Here's the proposal: It's essential to create a classification for brain-teasing titles.
Categorizing Game Types
Classifying creative works isn't exact; it’s very subjective, and it will always spark debates concluding with vague boundaries. There’s a reason film award organizations steer clear of genre categories. However, it represents a necessary evil for the industry of gaming, showing incredible range they hardly constitute as a single art form.
To recognize the complete range of gaming accomplishments to be recognized, and for games of all stripes to have a chance for representation, classification by type becomes crucial.
Present Award Structure
Prominent interactive entertainment events currently feature genre categories for Action, Action/Adventure, Role-Playing, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these six categories actually cover many game types, making space possible for most games within them.
Not so for brain-teasing titles. No suitable classification appears to put them. Consider three of this year’s best games, each quite distinct: structural challenges in a particular game, the pulse-pounding block-matching from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. Which classification works among existing types? Simply put, no category fits.
Acknowledgment Issues
There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games launched regularly that have no home at major award shows, if they accidentally match for categories like Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.
- A renowned logic title got overlooked in any category that year
- Another imaginative release was excluded in 2019
- A beloved organization game got ignored recently
- Only a few puzzle games managed to sneak into small studio or handheld classifications
Importance of Logic Titles
These are often compact experiences, however the design of the puzzle game is of massive significance. Well-known matching games rank among most engaged experiences worldwide continuing this trend for an extended period.
The famous puzzle experience competes with famous sandbox experiences competing to become most purchased experience; it also contends as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation with almost every other genre.
Proposal and Rationale
Puzzle games wouldn’t have that issue. One could readily select five nominees with fascinating, diverse, deserving games each ceremony simply — perhaps, with difficulty, because you’d have to leave many worthy titles.
Restating the point, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Puzzle game makers function at the challenging frontier of video game design, developing some of essential manifestations within interactive entertainment. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. Let’s not keep them waiting decades.
